How do I size panels and account for the appropriate clearances?

** The standard production tolerance on panels is +/- 1/16in.

For fixed panels, most customers allow for a 1/16in reduction in size from the panel opening. When considering production tolerances in addition to 1/16in clearance, fixed panels are produced 1/8in smaller than the panel opening in both height and width. Example: If your panel opening is 24 x 36, a fixed panel would be produced at 23-7/8 x 35-7/8. This would apply to all panels regardless of thickness.

Doors with standard swing hinges

For 1in thick swing doors, the general rule is to produce the panel 1/4in smaller than the available opening in both the height and width assuming there is little or no gap on the hinge side. Example: If your panel opening is 36 x 84, a 1in swing door panel would be produced at 35-3/4 x 83-3/4 and secured edge to edge as much as possible on the hinge side.

For 1.75in thick swing doors, the general rule is to produce the panel 1/4in smaller than the available height opening and 5/16in smaller than the width. Example: If your panel opening is 84 x 36, a 1.75in swing door panel would be produced at 83-3/4 x 35-11/16.

For 2in thick swing doors, the general rule is to produce the panel 1/4in smaller than the available height opening and 3/8in smaller than the width. Example: If your panel opening is 84 x 36, a 2in swing door panel would be produced at 83-3/4 x 35-5/8.

Doors with our DUAL handle/hinge

For 1in thick DUAL doors, the general rule is to produce the panel 1/4in smaller than the available height opening and 1/2in smaller than the width. Example: If your panel opening is 24 x 36, a 1in door panel for use with DUALs would be produced at 24-3/4 x 35-1/2.

For 1.75in thick DUAL doors, the general rule is to produce the panel 1/4in smaller than the available height opening and 5/8in smaller than the width. Example: If your panel opening is 24 x 36, a 1.75in swing door panel would be produced at 23-3/4 x 35-3/8.

For 2in thick DUAL doors, the general rule is to produce the panel 1/4in smaller than the available height opening and 11/16in smaller than the width. Example: If your panel opening is 24 x 36, a 2in swing door panel would be produced at 23-3/4 x 35-5/16.

What gasket should I use?

Modular Framing Systems sells 3/4in wide x 1/8in thick, closed cell neoprene foam gasket with an adhesive back (gasket tape). You can use any gasket that meets your project specs just be sure to consider the relationships between panel thickness, gasket thickness, and gasket compression.
