We Make The Box Easy, So You Can Focus On What You Do Best

How Flexware Focused on Innovation and Let Modular Framing Handle the Box

When Jim LaBrecque and his team at Flexware Control Technology set out to revolutionize supermarket refrigeration, they had a bold vision: create a compact, cost-effective system that simplifies installation and cuts energy use all while using next-generation refrigerants.

Jim and his team recently unveiled the FlexCube which is a compact, modular refrigeration system that’s changing how supermarkets build, cool, and heat their stores.

The FlexCube is a game-changer for supermarket refrigeration. It eliminates the need for:

  • Large mechanical rooms
  • Excessive piping and rooftop condensers
  • Complex installations and ongoing refrigerant leak maintenance

Instead, this compact 2×2-foot cube handles refrigeration and heat in one sleek unit — requiring less space, fewer technicians, and far less installation time.

Most importantly, it uses 75% less hydrofluorocarbon gas than traditional systems by switching to environmentally friendly A2L refrigerants, aligning with the EPA’s aggressive targets for reducing greenhouse gases.

Estimated Savings:

  • $1.5 million in construction costs per store
  • Significantly reduced energy usage over time
  • Lower maintenance overhead due to fewer leak points
  • Faster installation and reduced labor costs

The first full-scale rollout is at Hunter’s Shop ‘n Save in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire — the first supermarket in the U.S. to run entirely on A2Ls.

Letting Modular Framing Handle the Box

With so much innovation going into what’s inside the FlexCube, it didn’t make sense for Jim’s team to get bogged down designing the box for the air handling unit.

Here’s how Modular Framing Systems supported the launch:

  • Jim provided a hand-drawn sketch to the Modular Framing team and they turned it into a full CAD model using SolidWorks
  • Collaborated with Flexware engineers to adjust for fit, airflow, and access
  • Delivered a fully assembled frame and panel enclosure complete with access doors, dampers, and actuators, saving Flexware time, labor, and design bandwidth

“We make the box easy, so our customers can focus on what makes their products great.”
— Chip Holdridge, GM of Modular Framing Systems

By outsourcing enclosure design and assembly, Flexware was free to focus on integrating components, testing refrigerant efficiency, and preparing for nationwide rollout.

Why OEMs Choose Modular Framing Systems

Many OEMs and design-build contractors face the same dilemma. If you’re company has components and/or proprietary technology that requires a high-quality enclosure,

Modular Framing makes it simple:

  • No welding — just fast, easy, accurate assembly
  • Compatible with custom fabricated insulated panels, hardware, and air control accessories
  • Shorter lead times, lower labor costs, and proven quality
  • Optional CAD support, draft reviews, quick-assembly kit design, and even pre-assembly depending on your needs

Whether you’re in the idea phase or preparing for production, we help HVAC OEMs go to market faster — and with less stress.
